Ferdinand David's violin version of Bach's Suites, published in 1866, is a kernel at the heart of this project: David was the foremost violinist of his day, and he worked closely with the Schumanns, as well as with Felix Mendelssohn whom he succeeded as conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
The Suites therefore were known to musicians and students through much of the nineteenth century - though it took the groundbreaking recording of Pau Casals to bring them to wider public attention in modern times.

Jorge writes:

For most people, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach resonates deeply. It takes its listeners on an immersive journey to the very essence of existence. When you hear the mesmerising Cello Suites, you stand alone as in some unique musical cathedral. You become aware of your own insignificance and are led towards a much greater understanding of your place in the universe.

The Cello Suites form an important part of my personal musical journey and so, after recording my arrangement for unaccompanied violin of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (Pan Classics, 2022), the inevitable next step in my again very personal rethinking of Bach’s works was to explore these Suites further. In particular, the recording made by Pau Casals.
